Looking ahead a couple of days, thanks to high pressure that will park over SC we won't have as rainy a weekend as first thought. Temps should be bumping 60 for the highs and we should see generally sunny days with scattered clouds. Monday will bring a few chances at some rain, but considering how January is ending, I'll take it.

Hey 60 Grit, what's all this about Friday week? Nuther big storm! Not on the GFS models I've looked at. I've seen rumblins of it, but until I see it show up on the models, temps will be way too warm. If that changes I'll be on it like a glow fly on a,,,,,,errr........well. I'll just be on it.

I talked to DDD to find out the source of the questions, since I'm not over "there" and stuff anymore, and I understand better now. Here's the latest run, and not something I'm too concerned about since the majority of the runs are booking this flight. If that changes you'll get the same pick up and run with it that I always do, but right now the majority of the runs have the 540 line well north of us. Put another way; If "If's and But's were candy and nuts", y'all get the picture. Being a severe weather dude I don't dabble too much in speculation. I've either gotta know if it'll kill you or not.

Is the 540 line the freezing line?

Is the 540 line the freezing line? In essence. Yes. It is not the 0c temp line but has more to do with barometric pressure at elevation above sea level and dew point. In short it is where moisture falling will convert to frozen precipitation.

I am hoping for just some rain. Ice, even a little bit, wrecks havoc.

The 372hr. 500mb shear, 850mb vort maps are scary bad right now. I didn't include the precip maps because they are irrelevant to this wind / trough setup. Though the severe setup isn't there yet, conditions would be favorable for some pretty nasty mid February weather, as in violent, were this to prove out. It's a long way out, and there are a ton of model runs to go before then, so my bet is that it will moderated significantly (or maybe it's my hope) Either way, time will tell. Prepare for the worst, hope for the best with any weather during any season. That's my motto.

Hey Grit we are taking a group of Police Explorers to Gatlinburg next weekend for a competition. Any chance I can get you to pay a little extra attention to that area as the week goes along and give me a heads up if it starts looking bad?

DDD apparently sees something for next week that I don't. I've checked both 00z and 06z runs this morning and all I see is rain. The anomaly that I mentioned earlier for the 15th is still hanging around, but that doesn't mean anything much yet.
If I'm missing something he needs to get his hiney in here and spell it out for us.

Looky hea! It is the beginning of little leage season. Call whom ever, do what ever dance, but make it go elsewhere, somebody. Last year's Feb-April little leage play was a joke! Finally got good in May. If it wasnt raining, it was 35 degrees.
I like cold weather as much as the next hombre, but for gosh sake!

weak windy and short lived for NGA will mean another long lived mess. This forecast isn't about snow idjit..... It's about the potential for severe weather. Although NOAA and tropicaltidbits.com are a day apart with their map date info, the results are the same.

Still too early to nail this one down, but next weekend is shaping up to be a lively one. The GFS is showing snow on the backside of a tightly wound low that will rip up through Bama and Ga, however snow winding around on the backside of such an event is usually windy, fast and short lived, not to mention the sector of a low that is getting pumped full of dry air, so I wouldn't hold my breath for that. What does peak my interest is the potential for severe weather with this low. Like I said, it's early so we'll just watch and see how it develops as the week goes on. Well say what you mean then oh windy one

Well say what you mean then oh windy one I reported what the GFS was indicating, then I gave my forecast (said what I meant) Closet Georgia Tech Fan.... The closest anyone will come to snow out of that Low screaming up through here will be after it passes around the 10th or so (as it stands now) when it will be bitter cold again, and even then, we're only talking about NW Ga. and we all know that is bogus because Bitteroot will tell anyone that want's to listen, it just don't snow up in Sugar Valley.
