I have often thought about trying to build some rods and now my son is interested as well. I thought it would be something cool he and I could do together but really don't know where to start and what would be needed.

You need to take a couple of step stools out and go visit Mikey for a Saturday. Let him edumacate you on the process.

COOOOOOOOL I have often thought about trying to build some rods and now my son is interested as well. If you are close to Augusta or if I am coming to a gathering I would bring my hand tying setup to show you... it is so much easier then I even thought.... There is a lot of really good site for learning the basics....I started with doing it by hand ( It is more time consuming but the cheapest to start)A table clamp kit is only $40 and you use it for all your thread work. The only other thing you really need is a turning rack for drying the thread preserver and clearcoat ( Microwave turn table motor 4-6rpm 120v for the motor and some wood for the stands, use PVC w/ pvc screws to hold the butt of the rod).....
